SAE set to bag AirAsia maintenance job

February 1 2007

AIRASIA Bhd is likely to award its airframe maintenance job, valued at RM50 million annually, to local independent maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) company Sepang Aircraft Engineering Sdn Bhd (SAE), sources said.

The move reflects AirAsia's commitment to gradually bring its MRO operations, currently handled by Singapore Technologies Aerospace Ltd, back to Malaysian shores.

Malaysia to get another aircraft MRO facility

THE Government is expected to announce the establishment of a new aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Malaysia this month.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the centre would be an important step in making Malaysia an MRO hub in the Asia-Pacific region, but declined to elaborate.

He said the Government is encouraging local entrepreneurs to join hands with international players to set up MRO centres in the country.

Currently, companies providing MRO services in Malaysia include Airod Sdn Bhd for military aircraft, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) for civil aircraft and Dinet for general aviation and Eurocopter Malaysia Sdn Bhd for helicopters. All these companies are operating from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang.

Industry sources said the new MRO centre could be the one owned by entrepreneur Syed Budriz Putra, a royalty.
